Evaluation Procedure

The Evaluation Procedure, otherwise known as the Web Site Compliance Protocol, has been developed by the MSU Usability & Accessibility Center (UAC) to give you detailed instructions for how to evaluate the accessibility of your personal or departmental website. Web sites are considered compliant with the MSU Policy on Web Accessibility if they pass all the Required Checkpoints contained in the protocol. Accessibility will be enhanced if your website is able to pass the Recommended Checkpoints as well.

Web Accessibility Toolbar Instructions

There are three tools used to determine compliance: Internet Explorer, the Web Accessibility Toolbar for Internet Explorer, and System Access to Go, an online screen reader.

Follow the below steps to determine compliance:

  • Step 1: Start Internet Explorer as your Web browser.
  • Step 2: Add The Web Accessibility Toolbar (WAT) to Internet Explorer: http://www.paciellogroup.com/resources/wat-ie-about.html
  • Step 3: Follow the steps described in the Evaluation Procedure (Excel Document) for each item to determine if your Web site passes the criteria for compliance.
  • Step 4: For those items that require checking the site with a screen reader, use the User System Access to Go (SATOGO) application: http://www.satogo.com. Use the following keys on your keyboard to navigate your web page: tab, up and down keys. Verify its functionality by clicking on links and activating form fields using the space bar and enter keys.
